Starting a small business is a labor of love, often fueled by a unique vision, a desire for independence, and a passion for what you do. It's an exciting journey filled with opportunities, challenges, and, most importantly, a chance to create something that truly reflects who you are.

Aligning your personal values with your core business values can be a key to success.

What Are Values, and Why Do They Matter?

We’ve all had this situation: You’re working with someone (or meet someone socially) and quickly realize you don’t share the same values. But while it’s easy to recognize values you don’t share, can you identify the values you do hold?

Values are the principles, beliefs, and ideals that guide our lives. They define who we are as individuals and shape our behavior, decisions, and goals. Just as personal values serve as the compass of our lives, business values act as the guiding force behind your company's mission, culture, and brand.

When you align your personal values with those of your small business, you create a powerful synergy. This alignment can help you build more authentic and meaningful connections. It provides clarity, fosters trust, and makes it easier for customers, employees, and partners to connect with your business on a deeper level.

Discovering Your Business Values

Once you've identified your personal values, it's time to translate them into your business. This involves determining how these values can guide your company's operations and culture.

Here's how you can do it:

  1. Brainstorm three lists: A list of your personal values, a list of your business values, and a list of your clients' values.

  2. Go through each list and circle the 5 values on each that feel the most important.

  3. If you have a team, ask them to weigh in on these values lists. If you have clients, consider asking them how they perceive your company currently - this will give you valuable insight into what values are important to them.

  4. Make a Venn diagram of your business values, personal values, and your client values. Where do they overlap?

  5. Using at least some of the overlapping values, hone in on your top 3-5 company values.

The Power of Alignment

When your personal values align with your business values, you create a strong foundation for success. Here are a few reasons why this alignment is so important:

  • Consistency: Customers and employees will appreciate the consistency in your actions and messaging. This consistency builds trust and loyalty.

  • Motivation: When you're passionate about what you do and the values your business represents, you'll be more motivated and enthusiastic in your work.

  • Resilience: Alignment with your values can help you weather tough times. You'll be more likely to persevere when you're deeply connected to your business's mission.

  • Attracting the Right People: Like-minded individuals are more likely to be drawn to your business, whether they're customers, employees, or partners.
